Aatsistaakii (Rabbit Woman)

Bessie Lahr Big Spring

Artist’s great, great grandmother. Rabbit Woman was half Mexican and married the well known Pikuni leader, Big Spring. Bessie was known for being opinionated and headstrong. She had a well known dislike for the Bureau of Indian Affairs and according to family history “was kind of mean.” The epitome of “small but mighty,” Bessie Lahr Big Spring was also known for the revolver she kept in her blanket.
